World Thalassemia Day 2026: Free Awareness & Screening Program in Khulna

Introduction

World Thalassemia Day 2026 was observed with the goal of increasing awareness about thalassemia, early diagnosis, and accessible treatment in Bangladesh. This year’s global theme focused on identifying undiagnosed patients and supporting individuals living silently with the disease.

To support this initiative, a day-long free thalassemia awareness and medical campaign was organized at LABAID Diagnostic, Khulna under the supervision of Dr. Md. Ashikuzzaman, Hematologist and Blood Disorder Specialist from Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Why Thalassemia Awareness is Important

Thalassemia is one of the most common inherited blood disorders in Bangladesh. Many patients remain undiagnosed for years, while families often lack proper information about screening, treatment, and prevention.

Early diagnosis and counseling can help:

  • Prevent severe complications
  • Improve quality of life
  • Reduce unnecessary suffering
  • Increase awareness before marriage and pregnancy

Free Medical Services Provided in the Program

The World Thalassemia Day program at LABAID Khulna included several free services for patients and families, including:

✔ Free Thalassemia Counseling

Patients and guardians received guidance regarding diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management.

✔ Screening & Blood Evaluation

Basic screening and blood-related evaluations were conducted to identify possible thalassemia-related conditions.

✔ Medical Education & Awareness

Participants were educated about:

  • Thalassemia symptoms
  • Carrier detection
  • Importance of early screening
  • Available treatment options in Bangladesh

✔ Hematology Consultation

Patients received consultation regarding thalassemia, anemia, and other blood disorders.

Importance of Early Screening in Bangladesh

Many people become aware of thalassemia only after a family member is diagnosed. However, awareness and screening before marriage can significantly reduce the number of children born with severe thalassemia.

Regular awareness programs and community education are essential to improve public understanding of:

  • Genetic blood disorders
  • Carrier status
  • Long-term treatment support

Modern Thalassemia Treatment in Bangladesh

Today, modern treatment and management for thalassemia are available in Bangladesh. Under the care of experienced hematologists, patients can receive:

  • Blood transfusion support
  • Iron chelation therapy
  • Monitoring and follow-up
  • Advanced hematology consultation
  • Bone marrow transplant evaluation in selected cases

A Step Toward Better Awareness

The World Thalassemia Day 2026 program in Khulna was an important step toward improving awareness about blood disorders and encouraging early diagnosis. Community participation and education remain essential in reducing the long-term burden of thalassemia in Bangladesh.
