Blood Cancer: A Story of Hope and Recovery

“Doctor, will I survive?”

This was the question asked by a patient that I still remember vividly.

Mr. Dibash Chandra Ghosh, a 58-year-old man from Tala, a remote area in Khulna, first came to my chamber at Labaid Diagnostic, Khulna. He had been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a complex form of blood cancer. Like many patients, he and his family were overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty.

Diagnosis and Treatment Journey

After careful evaluation, he underwent six cycles of VRD chemotherapy, which is a standard and effective treatment protocol for Multiple Myeloma.

Following this, further assessments showed encouraging results. All reports indicated remission. To confirm the depth of response, an MRD (Minimal Residual Disease) test was performed at Labaid Diagnostic, Dhanmondi, one of the few CAP (College of American Pathologists) accredited laboratories in Bangladesh.

The result showed stringent remission, meaning the disease was under complete control at a molecular level.

Bone Marrow Transplant: A Critical Step

As part of the next phase of treatment, the patient underwent a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant at the Department of Hematology & Bone Marrow Transplant, Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The entire process was complex and required meticulous planning, monitoring, and teamwork. With the dedication of our experienced hematology and BMT team, the transplant was successfully completed—both clinically effective and affordable.

A New Beginning

Today, the same patient who once asked, “Will I survive?” has returned home with renewed hope and strength. Seeing the relief and happiness on the faces of the patient and his family is one of the greatest rewards in a physician’s life.

Just as a seed grows into a new plant, the transplanted stem cells have given him a new beginning—offering hope for long-term control of this complex disease.

Gratitude and Acknowledgment

This success was possible due to the relentless efforts of our dedicated Hematology & Bone Marrow Transplant team. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my mentor,
Dr. Abu Jafar Saleh, Head of Hematology & BMT Department, Evercare Hospital.

Final Thoughts

This case is a reminder that advanced diagnosis and treatment for blood disorders and blood cancer are now possible in Bangladesh. With timely intervention and proper guidance under an experienced hematologist, even complex conditions like Multiple Myeloma can be effectively managed—and in many cases, controlled.
